Harveston Lake Park
Great Lake Park in Temecula, CA
Broadway at the Park (Harveston Lake Park, 29005 Lakehouse Rd, Temecula, CA 92591)
When the main industry in town is the various wineries and the wine-tasting culture built around them, it can be hard to find family-friendly things to do in Temecula. The children’s museum is great for younger kids, sure, but for tweens and teens who are too old to enjoy a playground, but not old enough to enjoy wine-tasting, the city doesn’t have all that much to offer. When my family planned a trip to Temecula last spring, I worried that my eldest daughter, 14 years old, would be bored out of her mind after she heard me make a call regarding Harveston Lake Park Boat Rentals. Never much of the planner myself, I hadn’t come up with much of anything by the time we got there, and planned to just ask around to see if there was any other park nearby where we could eat lunch, that she might enjoy staying at it. From locals and other tourists alike, we got the same recommendation: Lake Harveston Park or Sam Hicks Monument Park. They recommended Lake Harveston Park for its lovely atmosphere, family (and dog!) friendly environment, and plenty of space to spread out and enjoy a picnic on a warm April afternoon. You can have all kinds of events at this park including a: Harveston Lake Park wedding, Harveston Lake Park fishing adventure, Harveston Lake Park gazebo party, and other Harveston Lake Park rental areas. It sounded decent, but not perfect. I had no idea we had just struck gold until we got to the park.
When we got there around 2pm, a crew of people were unloading what looked like a bunch of stage equipment onto an empty field, building mic stands and a sort of portable orchestra pit. I wandered over to try and get a sense of the commotion, worried that it might interrupt our peaceful lunch. I asked one of the workers what they were setting up for, and was told they were preparing for “Broadway at the Park” in about an hour. I could barely believe my ears—my daughter would be so delighted! Her absolute favorite thing in the world is Broadway musicals, and she had been sharing her all-time favorite showtunes with us on the road trip to Temecula. I rushed over to tell her about the event, and her eyes lit up instantly. She begged us to let her stay for an hour, and we happily obliged.
We rescheduled our afternoon wine-tasting tour, and set up our picnic blanket right in-front of the new stage. By 3pm, a good-sized crowd had amassed around the area. After a brief introduction, the opening chords to my daughter’s newest obsession, Hamilton, rang out through the park. Local performers sang tunes from Hamilton and other modern musicals, and even threw in a few classics from South Pacific and the Music Man for the old folks in the audience. It was a wonderful, completely unexpected experience, and absolutely made the difference for my daughter, who turned from a grumpy teen to an enthusiastic family member for the rest of our stay in town! It was at that moment when it really began to feel like home.
