Slate Tiles are more commonly known as Slate Shingles. Slate roof shingles are quite expensive to install for the time it takes, but a properly installed slate system can last from 80 to 400 years provided high-quality slate tiling's used for the job. Slate tiling does not deteriorate, which puts this tiling system in a league of its own. This type of tiling can be recycled from one building to another with relatively minimal wear and tear. The peg attachments in a slate system are the first point of failure outside of direct tile impact, and its typically noticed once it's slipped out of place. A slipped tile inherently opens up small gaps around the surrounding tiles. Toward the end of its life expectancy, the slate itself will start to separate. If any part of the lower section on slate tile breaks loose, a gap will begin to form between the tiles. Often, the area above the nail hole will egg out and eventually it allows the slate to slip off. In extreme weather conditions, the tile may crack in half from blunt force, and the bottom half will fall off the roof. Using a torching method is a standard repair process for securing the slate tiling. Torching is made from mortar filling beneath the slates, using the torch method to melt the supporting mortar. Sometimes this method will be used during the initial construction for added protection and durability. Slate tiling is on the heavy side for roofing materials and may cause the roof to split along the outer edges. If moisture gets trapped between the tiles, the roof itself may begin to rot causing the roof to weaken under the excess weight. It's important to make sure the attic and roof are well ventilated to the outside to prevent moisture from being trapped in the roof decking. Metal flashing is essential to use to help the rainwater run off the roof as quickly as possible. Roofing tiles made of slate come in all different shapes, colors, sizes, and thicknesses. Some of the more traditional tiles are from stone, and gravity is an essential factor for its placement. These tiles are called Flagstone. Low pitch roofs are mandatory for this type of tiling, and Flagstone is attached using a simple nail through a small hole. Sandstone was a material used for tiling in the past, but they tend to degrade a bit faster in areas of higher wind and rain.
